Dr. Harry R. Brady, M.D. 2019 Ageless Remarkable St. Louisan
Dr. Harry R. Brady, M.D. 2019 Ageless Remarkable St. Louisan

Dr. Harry R. Brady, M.D.

To say that Dr. Brady’s life has taken many twists and turns would be an understatement. Born into a poor family in Pittsburgh during the Great Depression, he attended Catholic schools, got into typical childhood mischief but excelled at academics. Coming from an industrialized city, he was encouraged by counselors to pursue an engineering degree. Through several twists of fate, an exam he took for a scholarship at another university, led to a full four-year scholarship to Georgetown University. With no engineering program, he found himself graduating with a B. S. in chemistry and encouraged to go to medical school. It was during medical school where he met a St. Louisan, Shirley Martin, who would become his wife.

Dr. Harry Brady is a board certified doctor of ophthalmology. After completing his internship at St. John’s Hospital (Mercy) and his residency at St. Louis University, he served in a MASH unit in Korea. When he returned to the states, he began private practice in St. Louis from 1967 to 2002. During that time he served as Chief of Pediatric Ophthalmology at Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital, a Consultant Ophthalmologist at Missouri School for the Blind, and Director of Ophthalmology for Project Crudem Medical Mission in Haiti. In 1998, Dr. Brady founded the Brady Eye Clinic at St. Louis University Eye Institute for the purpose of providing services for the homeless and indigent. To date, Dr. Brady has treated more than 12,500 patients free of charge. A great way to get to know more about the many adventures of Dr. Brady’s life is to read his book A New Lens on Life that was published in 2018.
