Gloria’s nursing career began in 1953 when she graduated with her BSN from St. Louis University School of Nursing. In 1955 she married Dr. Goronwy Broun Jr. and together they had 6 children. In 1982, when her youngest was in first grade, she got her Masters in Nursing. Over the years she has been a faculty member at both St. Louis University School of Nursing and University of Missouri St. Louis School of Nursing and very active in the Missouri Nursing Association serving on the board and as president for several years. Gloria was a member of the St. Louis University Hospital auxiliary from 1958 until 2016 where she was a past president and did a great deal of fundraising. Gloria continues to serve the same hospital, St. Louis University Hospital, where she volunteers every Monday selling flowers and delivering flowers to brighten up the cancer center, admitting and ICU waiting rooms. Nicknamed “The Flower Lady”, Gloria delivers more than just flowers. She comforts families during their time of need, listening to their stories, and easing their fears. If you take a walk through the hospital with Gloria, be prepared to be stopped because everyone knows the flower lady.
Gloria has been a member of St. Roch Parish since 1958 where as a member of the Altar Society she still cleans the church every Friday. She was also the chair of funeral luncheons for 12 years. Gloria also enjoyed a “second career” working as an usher at the Fox Theater for 20 years until 2017 when she retired.
Since 1955, Gloria and her family have enjoyed spending part of each summer in their happy place, Macatawa, Michigan.
